Montezuma Quail
Cyrtonyx montezumae
|
The male Montezuma Quail is handsomely adorned with stripes and spots, and sports a flaming yellow crest. The female's plumage is a more subtle blend of warm grays and dusty peach. They inhabit the mountainous arid regions of the American Southwest. Montezuma Quails are very well adapted to the persistent lack of moisture, and can do without water for long periods. They have stocky feet, which they use for digging up juicy tubers and roots which serve as vital sources of liquid. This adaptation is the key to survival in the harsh desert environment. The birds call to each other with gentle whistles.
