Katydid

Katydid
family Tettigoniidae

The Katydid's sleek emerald wings fold like a tent on its back when not in use. This insect uses its wings for "singing" as well as flying. The males of this species emit chirping sounds similar to those made by crickets and grasshoppers. The noise is made by rubbing the front wings together rapidly. The Katydid's hind legs are significantly larger than its front legs, and enable it to leap several inches at a time. This insect inhabits fields, brushy areas, woods, and lawns in temperate and tropical regions all over the world.
